A web directory is a collection of links broken down into relevant categories. Think Yahoo! and their directory, the Open Directory Project or even the Google Directory (which, incidentally, is pulled from the ODP). At its most basic level, a web directory is a collection of bookmarks made available to the public. In other cases, like Yahoo, it is a professional resource for people actively looking for information.
To get listed in such a directory, you can either get listed for free (which might take a while), or in many cases, pay a one-time fee to have your website reviewed and entered in the directory. One major exception is Yahoo, which charges a recurring fee for its commercial listings, and we’ll look at that later.
The Benefits of Being Listed in a Web Directory
In theory, there are two main benefits of being listed in a web directory:
1. Increased link-popularity due to a one-way link from a highly-respected resource.
2. Increased traffic due to being listed in a directory that is searched by many people every day.
In reality though, these benefits are directly related to how popular the directory is itself, and how much money you have paid for your listing. Of course, if the link is for free, there is nothing to worry about.

DIRECTORY SUBMISSION
Another good strategy to use alongside article marketing is directory submission. The best directory on the web is DMOZ.com, which is particularly hard to get accepted into, but there are hundreds of other directories. Some directories require payment, some are free and some require a reciprocal link.
The following website maintains an excellent list of directories, which can be organized by page rank or number of backlinks. It includes both free and paid directories:

Webmasters like you and me are always on the lookout to enhance the link popularity of their sites. One method of doing so is to seek out authority sites in your niche – sites that are widely known on the Internet (through the sheer number of back links) and have been around for some time (think more in terms of several years).
Unfortunately, such websites are often at a Page Rank of 6+ and as such, link exchange or text link ad placement is very, very expensive.
Luckily, there is a cheaper alternative. You can use web directories to not only enhance your search engine visibility (through increased link popularity), but by targeting niche categories and using sponsored listings where necessary, you can get a big jump in your traffic as well.
So, let’s get started…

SETTING UP THE SUBMISSION SOFTWARE
Directories are different from article submission in that they have short descriptions- usually only 250-500 characters, instead of the body for articles. You may simply take the summary from your article submission and create a description. 250 characters is about 4-5 lines. The submission form will correct the count should you enter too many. Simply reduce by removing some letters such as “a”, “the”, “an”, etc.
The ”project” starts with a “Project Title.” The Project Title is whatever name you want to place on the promotion. If it’s the website for “home business opportunity,” then you can simply name it that, or use initials. Depending on how many projects you are going to promote vary the name to identify each one easily.
The next page is simply your personal information. Here you want to put in a username and password that you can remember or write down. The software will fill this information automatically. You will have to go to your email and “confirm” your submissions to start.
The following page asks for the “url” or website address for the project you are promoting and the “category.” The category is the location you want people to find your ad on the directory. If it is a “home business opportunity,” then you may want to start with “Business” or “Internet” and have as your sub-category “Home Business” or “Work At Home Business.” The software will then pick up the closest topic area for that directory that closely matches your category or keywords.
You will have to experiment with the categories until you become familiar with the directory selections.
The titles, or subjects, are only 50-100 characters. The same should apply here. Pre-write these so that you have an idea what you want in the elements of the form. After the title, insert your description. The next item is very important and critical to the software application. The keywords are similar to category in that they prepare the software to seek out the most applicable sub-categories for your promotion. Try to use the same keywords as you are using to promote your website.
SUBMITTING YOUR PROJECT
The software contains 350 directories for manual submission. They load one at a time and the software fills all the elements for each directory. When it does not, simply click the “fill” button at the top-left and this will fill the missing sections.
This process takes about a minute for each directory therefore it may require 5-6 hours to submit to all the directories. The submission is very much worth the investment of time for the value of the outcome- hundreds of kinks back to your website. Remember the only reason we are completing these tasks is to achieve the backlinks that the search engines seek in order to place our websites at the top of the search engines.
Backlinks are the most critical determination of success with the search engines. These one-way links are the easiest to obtain and the ones we can gain the numbers we seek. I have researched the top websites and many have 10,000 and 20,000 links. This is not going to happen overnight, but these are the links that will gain us permanent natural links and the traffic we seek to our website to generate the income we seek.
If you submit your website to all 350 directories and half give you the links you seek your total will be 175. If you have 10 web pages on your website and you submit them all with similar results, you now have 1,750 links. Submit another ten times and you have 17, 500 links. This may take 2-3 months if planned properly. You will start to see greater traffic to your website in the second month.
If this is done 3 months in conjunction with the article submission program, you will have the traffic you seek after 3 months. This is very quick compared to the growth of other websites without spending major funds on marketing and promotion. These permanent links are invaluable. If you had to pay someone or a service to accomplish these outcomes, you would be out of tens of thousands of dollars.
